Dear Mommy

Every year there is a news article trying to guesstimate Mom’s worth. Last year ABC valued her at an impressive $61,436. We can put a price on her many tasks, but we all know she is invaluable. So let’s get mom back to her spry self this year, because we love and need her.

We have a treat for you, our Lake Pointe family, and it begins today! It happened so fast, but we are already five days into May (happy Cinco de Mayo) and it’s hard to imagine that Mother’s Day is only 8 days away. One lucky winner will receive a therapeutic massage for their mother on May 12th. We’ll do the drawing after 12:01am and announce the winner in the afternoon.

Here’s how you enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this blog about why you love your mom.
  2. Use your correct email address so that we can notify you if you are the winner.
  3. Sit back and wait for the drawing!

*Facebook is not affiliated with our contest. The winner is selected with a randomizer. Mom has 60 days to receive her prize. That way, she can pick a time when it’s most convenient.

What Does Your Pain Mean?

Pain is a normal part of life, but sometimes it requires attention. After exercising many of us suffer from cramps, aches, and stings. In these cases we know where the pain is coming from generally. At other times the pain seems to have no obvious causes at all. The biggest issue with pain is knowing when it needs medical attention. It can be hard knowing if your minor pain can be a big problem.

Lake Pointe Chiropractic is here to help! We’ve scoured the internet and brought our favorite resources to you. It’s now easier than ever to assess whether you should seek care for your pain.

WebMD:

From WebMD.com

WebMD is a top choice for us. You just click where you are experiencing pain on your model and WebMD’s symptom checker gets to work. We chose this site because it lists the possible ailments by order of probability. When dealing with pain there are always several possibilities, but this helps keep you focused on what is most likely. The site helps zone in on your most probable issues with a series of questions.

Runner’s World:

From RunnersWorld.com

Runner’s World is aesthetically pleasing, but it offers much more than good looks. The interactive body lists the injuries most common to those who participate in fitness and sports. The gem of the site is the forums section. The forums allow for people to discuss their injuries and ways that they were able to overcome them. At the bottom of the interactive tool is a link to the prevention and care center. There you can find videos and useful articles to help you nurse pain at home.

ABC News:

From ABCNews.go.com

ABC’s website is incredibly helpful for those who have pain caused by serious injuries. The site helps you explain your pain to a health practitioner and know when your pain requires medical care. ABC has two helpful tools to help you diagnose pain.

The first tool is an interactive body that you can click on. It tells you likely causes of pain for that region and provides links to articles about the ailments. It is called “Point Out Your Pain” and can be found at: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/popup?id=4104809 .

The second tool provides you with a printout sheet to take to a medical professional. It helps you assess the severity of your pain and includes a medical history portion that is useful to medical professionals. You just answer the questions and ABC makes a printout for you! It is called “Print Out Your Pain” and can be found at: http://abcnews.go.com/Health/popup?id=6401872 .

As always, it is best to seek medical care if you are experiencing persistent pain. Websites should never be replaced with proper medical care. The information on the websites are only suggestions and aim to allay fears of minor injuries and to highlight possibly serious issues.

The Journey to a Cure

The Time is Now

At Lake Pointe Chiropractic we think differently. Every person who walks through the door immediately becomes family. We want to engage with them and learn more about their own families. The care is so deep that some of our new family members become friends as well; people who we consider part of our lives. When tragedy strikes we have no choice, but to be compelled to action. As a healthcare professional and as a family member, I have experienced the turmoil of cancer not once, but twice. I want to talk about my journey to the battle against cancer.

Many years ago, when I was younger, I had my first personal experience with disease and how it affects families. My cousin developed Hodgkin’s disease, a cancer of the lymph nodes that can spread to nearby areas. My aunt and uncle needed a caretaker, someone who could take her to chemotherapy and be there to help out. I became completely immersed in this disease. Together we would go to chemotherapy; I assisted in any way I could. Massages, general care, looking after the house she was in were all parts of my world now. Happily, she would be in remission soon, but we were warned that they expected the cancer to show up elsewhere later in life.

Several years later, but still too soon, the cancer did show up again. This time it was in the form of breast cancer. We would have to forge ahead again in the battle for her health. The news of her ailment was a great shock. I always knew that it would come back, but the timing was impeccable. Not long before word came of cousin, horrid news in the office had walloped all of us. A dear friend and patient here at Lake Pointe developed breast cancer as well.

I cared about cancer previously, but this was the tipping point. I knew I needed to do more and I did. I signed on with It’s The Journey and the office began partaking in walks and fundraising. I would like to say that I chose It’s The Journey, but it was the only choice to me. I wanted to start seeing change in my area and the program gives back to those in Georgia.

Today both women show no signs of cancerous growths and our patient is a six year survivor. It is too late for me though; my passion will never go into remission and I will not stop battling cancer. 1 in 8 women will be affected by breast cancer, but don’t forget men and children are affected as well. So please don’t wait; fight now. Today we will be taking donations at 41 & Mars Hill here in Acworth. Look out for our pink boots!

For Neck Pain, Chiropractic and Exercise are Better than Drugs

Here’s an article by Anahad O’Connor that was published in the New York Times.

Seeing a chiropractor or engaging in light exercise relieves neck pain more effectively than relying on pain medication, new research shows.

The new study is one of the few head-to-head comparisons of various treatments for neck pain, a problem that affects three quarters of Americans at some point in their lives but has no proven, first-line treatment. While many people seek out spinal manipulation by chiropractors, the evidence supporting its usefulness has been limited at best.

But the new research, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, found that chiropractic care or simple exercises done at home were better at reducing pain than taking medications like aspirin, ibuprofen or narcotics.

“These changes were diminished over time, but they were still present,” said Dr. Gert Bronfort, an author of the study and research professor at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minnesota. “Even a year later, there were differences between the spinal manipulation and medication groups.”

Moderate and acute neck pain is one of the most frequent reasons for trips to primary care doctors, prompting millions of visits every year. For patients, it can be a difficult problem to navigate. In some cases the pain and stiffness crop up without explanation, and treatment options are varied. Physical therapy, pain medication and spinal manipulation are popular options, but Dr. Bronfort was inspired to carry out an analysis because so little research exists.

“There was a void in the scientific literature in terms of what the most helpful treatments are,” he said.

To find out, Dr. Bronfort and his colleagues recruited a large group of adults with neck pain that had no known specific cause. The subjects, 272 in all, were mostly recruited from a large HMO and through advertisements. The researchers then split them into three groups and followed them for about three months.

One group was assigned to visit a chiropractor for roughly 20-minute sessions throughout the course of the study, making an average of 15 visits. A second group was assigned to take common pain relievers like acetaminophen and — in some cases, at the discretion of a doctor — stronger drugs like narcotics and muscle relaxants. The third group met on two occasions with physical therapists who gave them instructions on simple, gentle exercises for the neck that they could do at home. They were encouraged to do 5 to 10 repetitions of each exercise up to eight times a day. (A demonstration of the exercises can be found at www.annals.org).

After 12 weeks, the people in the non-medication groups did significantly better than those taking the drugs. About 57 percent of those who met with chiropractors and 48 percent who did the exercises reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, compared to 33 percent of the people in the medication group.

A year later, when the researchers checked back in, 53 percent of the subjects who had received spinal manipulation still reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, similar to the exercise group. That compared to just a 38 percent pain reduction among those who had been taking medication.

Dr. Bronfort said it was a “big surprise” to see that the home exercises were about as effective as the chiropractic sessions. “We hadn’t expected that they would be that close,” he said. “But I guess that’s good news for patients.”

In addition to their limited pain relief, the medications had at least one other downside: people kept taking them. “The people in the medication group kept on using a higher amount of medication more frequently throughout the follow-up period, up to a year later,” Dr. Bronfort said. “If you’re taking medication over a long time, then we’re running into more systemic side effects like gastrointestinal problems.”

He also expressed concern that those on medications were not as empowered or active in their own care as those in the other groups. “We think it’s important that patients are enabled to deal with as much control over their own condition as possible,” he said. “This study shows that they can play a large role in their own care.”

Dr. Deb to Receive Proclamation from Mayor

chiropractor acworth georgia

Dr. Deb

Dr. Deb is being recognized for her breast cancer awareness efforts at the Acworth City Council meeting on October 20th at 7pm. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr. Debra Schreibman of Lake Pointe Chiropractic will be receiving a proclamation from Mayor Tommy Allegood for her efforts toward promoting breast cancer awareness to her patients and to the community.

Dr. Deb works closely with It’s the Journey, a breast cancer awareness nonprofit organization which focuses its efforts on breast cancer education, early detection, awareness and support services for people within the local area. Dr. Schreibman recently participated in the 2 day cancer awareness walk, raising over thousand dollars for the cause.

Deb first got involved with breast cancer awareness when her cousin was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The effects of chemotherapy and the treatments for the lymphoma set the stage for her cousin to have breast cancer many years later.

Later, one of Dr. Deb’s best friends and patients was diagnosed with breast cancer, and the cycle repeated itself. She worked closely with her friend, and began actively advocating the cause of breast cancer awareness by participating in walks, fundraisers, and more. She is personally committed to the elimination of breast cancer.

Dr. Deb is excited about receiving this proclamation as it shines a spotlight on the breast cancer awareness movement.

Mercury free office in Acworth

I am pleased to announce that Lake Pointe Chiropractic of Acworth, Ga is the 1st mercury free wellness center in Acworth, GA!

Not only are we concerned about the well being of our planet, but first and foremost, the well being of our patients. I bet some of you don’t even know what I am talking about right now….that you didn’t know there was mercury in the lightbulbs that you use in your homes every day. And, mercury is toxic. Did you know if you break a light bulb, you are not supposed to just pick it up and put it in the garbage? If you do this, the mercury gets into our landfills and seeps into our earth and makes us all sick!

Traditional lightbulbs use a ton more energy than the mercury free LED light bulbs that we now use throughout my office. If you want specific numbers just call Doug with Deep Green Lighting (770-630-7883) and he can give you the specifics.

What I can tell you is that my office is significantly cooler since I made the switch to these amazing light bulbs. I can touch a light bulb that has been on for 12 hours in my house and they are still cool to the touch, unlike traditional lightbulbs which will burn your hands if you touch them after being on for 20 minutes.

I am also seeing a huge decrease in my electric bill, which will make up for the cost of the light bulbs in 2 months. I love my new and improved mercury free office and I know you will too!

Come check us out and we will continue to provide cutting edge healthcare and health options for you and your family!
